Please bear with me that I am updating in reverse order from now (end of November) back to July (when I stopped being well enough to focus).

So, despite never having heard of it, we bought a Couvon to Sassy's in Brentwood. After one particularly rough day with a toddler and newborn, we all tackled our first family dinner out.

Charlie is a turd to take out now. To keep him in check he needs to be strapped in at all times, and even that only cures my inability to chase him (post c-peat) and worsens his attitude.

Still, Sassy's lives up to being a family restaurant. The waitress did an excellent job helping entertain him.

I must start by saying that I HATE Cafe Mexico downtown. I think it is by far the worst Mexican food on the face of the planet.

So, when the Groupon came up for Cafe Mexigo, I was hesitant. Seriously, who expects to order a chicken and veggie quesadilla and get hard, raw carrots in it? Yuck.

But, we decided to give this place a try and bring the in-laws as our treat.

The starter was chips, salsa, and guacamole. I thought the salsa sucked. I doubt they make it. Maybe they make the chips. I couldn't really tell but they probably do. Matt liked the guacamole, but this is one food that I just cannot force myself to like.

Matt's mom had a veggie burrito, and the rest of us had chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. I liked it. I thought it was tasty. The biggest fan was Charlie, who ate more than a healthy serving of the rice and beans. It could have used a few more chips for eating the beans, but it is really nothing to complain about.

The dessert was really good. Sugary, deep-fried flour tortillas. Nothing special but tasty none the less.

The staff seemed a little overwhelmed, but they held their own (and they were not complaining by the HUGE number of people coming in with Groupons).

So, after our awful experience at The Office, we tiptoed over to our favorite taco place, Hernande'z.

Man, these are by far the best tortillas I have ever had. I just love these tacos and we do not get to come here often enough.

They have raised the prices slightly since the last time we visited, but only $1 per taco order (5 are $6 instead of $5). Now, you can add an extra tacos for $1. So, including tax, it was $7.84 for 6 super yummy chicken tacos.

Quick, cheap, quality food. Need I say more?

Hmmm, not usually let down by our Groupon, but this one really sucked.

I will caution everyone against going to The Office, especially for the Sunday/Monday movie night, because as it turned out, that is what we bought (despite the Groupon being a $60 value and this deal of dinner/movie being only $54).

The choices are severely limited. Two appies: bread or Ceaser salad. Two mains: linguine or salmon. The linguine had tomatoes and olives, the salmon is salmon: all of which Matt doesn't like.

We were not even offered the regular menu.

The appies came. My "jem lettuce" Caesar was actually just plain old romaine in a small dish. The dressing was very good though. Plus, the "naan" and tatziki Matt ordered turned out to be stale Thrifty's pita (not naan) and store-bought tatziki. I was proud when he sent it back and asked for the salad instead. The salad was small, but at least it tasted good. There is no way this is on the normal menu though, and if it is and more than $4, what a rip off!

But seriously, it really bothers me that they upscale the lame dishes on the menu and then serve total bottom of the line crap. Why say it is jem lettuce when it isn't? If Matt hadn't worked in produce (for years), we probably wouldn't have noticed, but why lie? The average person has no idea about types of lettuce beyond iceberg, leaf, and romaine.

We ordered one of each main course. Matt went for the pasta. It was well done. It had capers, sun dried tomatoes, and black olives. It really could have used a seafood or chicken. I would be surprised to see this item on a menu for more than $12. It also came with 2 pieces of focaccia.

I had the salmon with fingerling potatoes, green beans, a creepy 1/2 tomato, and crispy onions. The salmon was supposed to have crispy skin, and it did on the ends. It was actually well cooked and fairly tasty. The potatoes were very good. The green beans were plain, but fresh and well cooked. I really don't have any complaints about this entree. I could have made it at home though. It was simple, but at least they can do simple food.

The dessert, at best, can be described as sketchy. It was an apple crumble with ice cream. No choice. Hope no one is allergic to apples! Ours had a slice of Granny Smith on top; everyone else seemed to get a gooseberry. It was small. VERY small. Like, for a normal sized person, 4 bites? That wouldn't be a big deal, if it was good. But it was not. It was SO over cooked. Basically, I could make this by putting a spoon of applesauce in Charlie's baby bowl, and then some crumble on top and microwaving for 2 minutes. This mess was topped off with a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream. Classy.

Why would anyone go here? I cannot fathom. Sauce has the same atmosphere and menu style, but the food is actually good.

My one compliment would be our waitress. She was very good. We were not much into being warm and happy customers, although we didn't try to cause trouble, and she did a good job.

Honestly, this was an awful experience. We will not be back. This is the second time in our lives we went and got a snack directly after dinner. It wasn't that we were still hungry; it was that we were very very unsatisfied. Considering this meal would have been $27 EACH, that is horrifying. I can't believe this place stays open.

This is exactly the WRONG way to offer a Groupon. If you read the Urbanspoon reviews, you will see there are even more people upset over their experiences. Why alienate people who are not even your customers yet?

This morning we ventured out for breaky to use another of our Groupon surplus. We went to the Broadmead Bakery, a place neither of us had eaten at but both of us have walked by numerous times.

We knew going in that there would be a limited menu to choose from, and I am impressed because I feel like rather than only offering up the least expensive items they chose the items that put their best food forward. I think this should be a mandate of all business that offer a Groupon: attract new customers! Don't use it to press people through the doors! That is a poor way to play the situation, as no one ends up happy and you end up with a bunch of negative reviews on Urbanspoon.

Anyway, the Broadmead Bakery had at least two options either of us would have eaten happily, but we both went for the Eggs Benny. The fact the Groupon also included a drink kind of threw me off, as I am not drinking coffee, so Matt got us both a hot chocolate, which was quite good.

Now the food...

Presentation = A
Doesn't it look nice?

The Hollandaise = A
Oh man! It was good! Very lemony.

Benny ham and cheese = Yum (that is a grade on my scale now)

Eggs = C-
Sorry, but the egg almost ruined the entire meal for me. It was WAY too over cooked. The yolk was dried out and flakey. Even though there was enough sauce, because the eggs were so dry, I could have used double.

Scone = A+
The benny was served on a cheese scone instead of the traditional English muffin. I really enjoyed the scone itself. Frankly, I enjoy eggs benny served on other starch types, just not super tough bagels (take note, Blue Fox!).

I will not grade the side dish. It was some sort of yam stick hashbrowns. It looked very nice, but I don't really like yams anyways, so it wouldn't be fair for me to criticize this. Matt liked it a lot and ate both our servings.

As an important side note, this place does not seem child-friendly, as there are no highchairs on site or in sight. After Charlie's terrible behavior (throwing, whining, being a grump, etc), I am not surprised. However, I still think a highchair or two could expand the clientele and encourage those with well-behaved babies (re: not toddlers) to come and enjoy a meal.
Cost: $12

Prep: 15 minutes

We decided to redo the nachos that didn't go so well last week. We had leftover sausages from last night, and this time, I added enough cheese!

The only problem was that when we bought the cilantro, the store had actually labelled Italian parsley cilanto. Oops. So, the salsa was simply tomato, onion, sugar, and lime..not so great.

Because of our excursion to the raspberry patch today, we have (had) three pounds of raspberries in the fridge. We bought a little whipped cream and an angel food cake to compliment a few of these. What a great dessert. Raspberries are my favorite, but the ones sold in stores taste so wrong. Has anyone else ever noticed that? There is something about raspberries either eaten straight off the bush or saved for later that has so much more flavor than the packaged and shipped store-bought counter-parts.
Over the next couple weeks, you will notice us eating out A LOT. This is because of 2 factors. The first is that it is quite hot, and since our beautiful kitchen has 2 non-opening skylights, it is stinking hot. It is soooo hot, I can barely stand to even go in there for a late night snack.

The second reason is that in not too long, we will be housebound again with a new baby, as well as our misbehaving toddler, and we need to use up the surplus of Groupons, Couvons, Swarmjams, etc that we have accumulated.

So, this morning we went and picked raspberries. We filled our buckets, then our bellies, then pet some goats.

On our way back, we decided to use our Groupon to the Euphorium Bakery. Matt's work often visits here, and he has heard good things.

I cannot remember how much we paid for the coupon, but I think the "value" was about $25 (ie, that is how much this lunch would cost).

It included 2 sodas, 2 panini, and 2 soft ice cream cones.

I loved the sodas. I think there is something about the glass bottles, which hold the same amount as a can, that is just so classy. It reminds me of being in France on a patio sipping a soda and watching the crowd (although I am not sure that either time I was in France I actually drank from a glass bottle).

The panini were great. The bread they used was deliciously salted. We had 1 that was ham and edam, and the other was the curried chicken. As I ate each, I was sure that it was my favorite, but after, I couldn't decided. The curried chicken was so interesting and flavorful, but the ham/cheese was so classic and gooey.

The ice cream was fine as well, exactly as suspected. Charlie had some weird, huge tantrum over it. He wanted to hold it, or not hold it, or hold it only upside down, or just eat the cone, or just eat the ice cream, or have the ice cream but in a bowl, or have no one touch him, or be cuddle, or or or...it was very unclear.

I do have one criticism. It was the smokers outside. In the background of the picture, you can see three people. The woman on the left and man on the right BOTH decided to light up while we were EATING with our CHILD. One: that is rude. Two: that is unhealthy. Three: that is illegal. Four: that is just stinking gross. We didn't want to deal with it, as we were outnumbered, but the staff really should have said something, as they are the ones with signs up and are then the ones complicit with someone breaking a law (no smoking on patios, as well as a certain distance from doors) in the vicinity of their business. One of the employees should have told the people they couldn't smoke there.

We packed up and moved inside, but I was very disappointed. Was I disappointed enough not to come back? Despite the food being good, I'm not sure. It really did sour the experience for me.
Want a really cheap breakfast in Richmond? How about Ikea?

We decided to kill two birds with one stone, and get our breakfast at Ikea where we were going shopping. At $1 a plate, it was fine to get Charlie his own plate and let him eat or not eat. He ate some sausage, a bit or so of the creepy eggs, and maybe a few hasbrowns.

I ordered 2 plates, 1 with pancakes. I ate some hashbrowns, the sausage, pancakes, and a juice. Matt had the same plus a cinnamon bun and coffee.

It sounds excessive, but for under $7, it was fine and did the job.
We are on the mainland for a wedding for a few days. We left a day early to take Charlie to the aquarium. However, a bonus of this is that Matt and I got to eat at our favorite pasta place in THE WORLD. It was less than 15 minutes off course on the way to Stanley Park, and we were very happy people.

We started coming here years ago when a girlfriend of mine was a server here. She helped us learn the best ways to order. It may look like we are over-doing it, but we always have a plan!

Our favorite is the Emiliana. We ALWAYS have this one. It has chorizo, olives, feta, tomatoes, and possibly other stuff. Man, it is good! It is my favorite pasta dish in the entire world. The best I think I have ever had.

This time we also tried the gnocchi in the pesto marinara. Matt likes gnocchi, but I find it too plain no matter the sauce. Still, this was very good.

We ordered the dinner size, as we did not want to have to find dinner (which ended up working very well, as Charlie puked as soon as we got to where we were staying, and we didn't want to take him out again). We had a full plate of pasta again!

We will be back at Anton's on every opportunity we get. And because these opportunity is less than once a year (well, we were here in November, but not since 15 months or so before that), neither of us feel bad for indulging. And, as a bonus, even with the dinner sized servings, our bill is always under $30.

I have nothing interesting to say about this. Really. Nothing.

I am thinking that I will no longer blog about EVERY dinner. I really want to just review restaurants and talk about interesting things we cook. Seriously, does anyone want to read about the fifth time I make tacos from a box?

Anyway, this was steak. Look at the size of the steak Matt made me. I didn't eat most of it, and we are off for three days tomorrow. I hate to waste, but it looks like I will have to.
We havent been to Cabin 12 since long before it moved to the new location.

Hmmmm...well, I am writing this as I sit in a 1/2 full restaurant at 1pm on a Tuesday. Waiting. Waiting. Still waiting...

Okay, we finally ordered. No apology; business as usual? I hope not because we are hungry.

Interesting to note: we are 1 of 3 tables, currently only 5 tables seated in entire restaurant, dining with a baby.

One thing that really bothers me while dining out is when I can hear the staff complaining. The waiter was complaining to another patron (?) about how busy they were. Well, there were maybe 2 tables finishing as we got there, 3 eating while we were, and 1 that came in after us. Maybe not even that . many total. In my opinion, it was dead. Why complain? He seemed unable to handle his workload still, and that made me nervous for him and the establishment, as if this is busy for them, yikes!

The food was also not up to the standards of the downtown Cabin 12. The hasbrowns were absolutely AWFUL! Matt and I could not agree on the origins, but I thought they were bad enough that they were previously frozen and cooked until they were flakey and dry.

Matt ate an omelette with bacon, feta, and red peppers. That, he states, was delicious.

I had the Badger Benny. I can't remember exactly what was on it, but it had various meats and veggies (tried to look online, but for some reason they don't post the full menu??) like bacon, sausage, onion, and tomato. The eggs were well done, and the Hollandaise was good too.

However, the hasbrowns were really unforgivable. Breakfast is what Cabin 12 does. And hasbrowns are 1/2 the meal. Really gross. Huge fail.

But still, the service was lacking, and the atmosphere felt kind of off. Maybe they are being haunted by the ghosts of all the failed restaurants that have tried to open in this location?

I like Azuma Sushi, as I have said before, no matter what anyone else says.

We ordered waaaay too much this time though.

Started with rice. Charlie loves rice. He was bring quite the turd though. We are very close to no longer going out with him. The rice ended up being all he wanted.

We also had an order of tempura (yum), goyza, and various sushi.
I was very excited to find out what was inside. We waited the three days to open it, with me trying to constantly forget about it.

We weren't sure what to expect.

We did not expect what we found.

I laughed out loud.

It is from Matt's grandparents' house in Ontario. His uncle wanted us to have something crazy and kitschy to remind us of the place :)
My parents has their annual party. This year it was a potluck super with no children allowed and a mandatory hat theme.

Matt and I made ourselves some hats (taking home prizes for most creative and most beautiful).

My brother, who only being 15 was not allowed at the party, came and babysat Charlie. They ate McDonalds--"Um, Charlie is eating ketchup with a spoon and dipping fries in yoghurt".

Matt made plenty of interesting shots, none of which I could have of course!
It's so hoooooooot. I can not make myself cook in this weather. If this were BC (before Charlie), we would just go out.

Alas, those days are no longer, as are further numbered as we will soonish have a newborn and a toddler to deal with. So, we stayed home and did not use the oven.

Matt barbequed some chicken legs. I read that using a citrusy marinade helps reduce the harmful effects of charring meat. With the amount of time Matt has been standing in front of that grill, this seems important.

I made a marinade that is 1/2 lime juice and 1/2 balsamic vinaigrette. Matt hates balsamic vinegar, so he just had barbeque sauce. It was probably the best tasting chicken I have had in a long time. Charlie loved it, and he ate two legs.

I did have to generate some heat by using the toaster to make us some garlic toast as a side. We also ate a giant bowl of Greek salad--although we were out of tomatoes.
I escaped being a mom for lunch today! However, neither of my dining partners can say the same thing, as I was with my mom and my grandma!

I met them over at Tillicum Mall, as they were doing some business at the bank. I have nothing against Kelsey's or Montana's, and have had positive and negative experiences at both. I received a second degree burn on my hand at Kelsey's from the microwaved dip--it was unnaturally hot and we should have been warned. And, years ago, I almost died from diabetes complications after food poisoning from Montana's; I spent almost a week in the hospital; I was not the only one, and was contacted and spoke with many agencies who investigated this event.

But, that was over a decade ago now. These are not "bad" restaurants, and I have eaten at Montana's a few times since the event, and am pretty sure it has switched management in this time.

We all ordered off the "15 minutes or free" menu, because that is what looked good. I was probably the least satisfied, but it was because the fries were lame. I should have not listened to my baby-belly and went with the salad. I LOVE the pulled pork sandwich though. Usually, my mom and I share it, but today we went seperate route. The fried onions are so good, and the bun is so soft. The sandwich is also HUGE, and I didn't need to eat the fries anyway. (Sorry about the pictures; there was something on my lens.)

My mom had the chili. It was awesome that it came with bread and a salad. It looked like a great meal. I think I will have this at some point. She really enjoyed it.

My grandma had a lunch combo that was salad, soup, and 1/2 sandwich. It also looked very tasty. She had the brisket for the sandwich and the chili as the soup.

It is a place that is kid friendly in the day for sure (no experience with night). One really neat thing I saw kids getting was a set of mini-ice cream cones and lunch served in a truck kind of like a boat for the pirate pack. I also like the colouring on the table thing. However, it is not healthy food. It is calorie ridden and fatty. It needs to be an occasional event to eat here.
This is one of my favorite dinners. I just love chicken Caesar salad. We used leaf lettuce, light dressing, crisp bacon, croutons, and grilled small chicken breasts. I also made garlic buns (margarine and crushed garlic).
Well, it is raining pretty hard, so our Goldstream campfire dinner is postponed (there will be a campfire ban next week, so VERY postponed).

"Camping" dinners are usually not very healthy, and this was no exception. I mostly ate chips. I also had 1/2 a hot dog (I'm sure all the judgey and first time preggos and momma just gasped in horror). I also had a diet pop (judge away).
The best part, however, was that my parents have this strange old chimney thing in the yard so we could still roast marshmallows and make s'mores. Charlie was very well behaved. He sat on this little chair and poked the fire, but he didn't wave his stick around and his butt stayed planted.
The meal shows how flexible I am: something came up so I made our dinner for lunch! One thing I haven't commented on is brought to light by this post. My husband and I are both teachers. That means the three of us are at home for three meals a day for two months. Now, I don't go all out for lunch every day, but we can't eat grilled cheese and condensed soup every day.

So, tonight, there are plans to go to have a campfire, so dinner needed to be cooked. To make it more "lunchy", I added a handful of chips. Lol. No. I did that because I am pregnant and really want chips. I am being honest.

I made mini-quiche. I needed to take something as an appie to our get-together tonight as well, so I managed two jobs at once.
Add some milky whipped egg, bake 20 minutes, and you have lunch (or an appy, as I am bringing these cold to a baby shower soon too).
As an extra bit of health, I steamed some green beans and we had a hearty serving of these on the side.
I know these dishes don't go, but the plan was for turkey burgers. Matt was going to make us an appy of wanton soup, as we needed to use up some wantons that his father had made and were in our freezer. When I went in the kitchen to see what he was doing, he wasn't making an appy but a full pot of soup, so we just ate it as the side dish instead.

For the turkey burgers, which we grilled, I made a light coleslaw to go on the burger buns. It was a nice change, as these burger tend to be dry.
The cost of this dinner was higher than usual because we had our good friends the MacLellans over to eat (so 6 instead of 3).

We barbequed some nice sausages: honey garlic and bratwurst. We ate these like a classy hot dog.

I made two salads to go with dinner. The first was a simple Caesar. THe second was an awesome pasta salad. It was tortellini, yellow peppers, green onions, and a balsamic vinaigrette. I wish I had a better picture, as it was also very beautiful!
This afternoon, Mommy went for a massage while Daddy and Charlie went to Miniature World. Then, we walked a few blocks over and had dinner at the Pink Bicycle.

I have only ever had appies here, and those were good. I have heard rants and raves about the burgers, and I guess it is all a matter of personal taste.

We sat inside at the back, but we should have sat outside since Charlie was being a terror. Seriously, worst child behavior ever. He hit the guy across from us with a fry. Twice. I was mortified. We should have left, or given him a time out, but we were cramped for space.

Anyway, food. Our appie was really yummy. We had onion rings. The onion rings here are spicy. I like that. Not everyone will though. Luckily, Charlie did.

Matt had a pork burger. He really liked this. I tried it, and more than did NOT. Not my thing, and I would have never ordered it for me.

After waffling on whether to have the special (a camel burger--is that real camel?), I just had a cheese burger. (The bun, indeed, was intact; the picture is after I gave Charlie some.) I have mixed feeling about it. The pickle was awesome--duh, preggo. The sauce and cheese and bun and veggies were good--especially the sauce--highlight! The burger patty was meh. It tasted home-made. And that is probably what some people like about this place. But you know what? You know where else I can get a burger that tastes home-made? Home. And it doesn't cost $13. I thought it needed more flavor, something special.

The fries were great though. And the service was, too.

I don't know; I don't really have any complaints that are valid. I just wasn't a huge fan of the dish I ordered. I will be back; I'm sure a place with such a great reputation deserves another chance.

Another perfect summer meal, as this only needed to be ovened for about 10 minutes!

Matt made us a GIANT bowl of fresh salsa--the picture is of our large salad bowl and a serving spoon.. This is one of the best things he knows how to make, and is perfect for any summer day. It takes a lot of tomatoes, but when tomatoes are on sale, we eat as much of this salsa as we can. The other ingredients are simple: onion, cilantro, lime juice, bit of sugar. At times we add jalapeno, but not recently as we don't want to upset Charlie's belly.

For the nachos, I thinly sliced up the left over Chorizo from yesterday, as well as green olives and yellow peppers. The only downside to this meal was that I did not add nearly enough cheese to the Que Passo chips. The cheese was very finely grated, so I should have put a lot more than I did. I cooked it on parchment paper, which saved on clean up, as there basically was none.
Still, a bit of protein from the cheese and sausage, starch from the chips, dairy from the sour cream, and tons of veggies because of how much salsa we ate, I think this is a pretty decent meal.
